The manuscript focuses on the Process Analytical Technologies applied to the coating process of tablets in an industrial perforated pan. The paper discusses the following topics: process understanding and phenomenological description of the coating process; pan modeling in terms of spray pattern, droplet drying, moisture characterization, and tablet trajectory; regulation and control of a perforated pan. A progressive dismissal of the process recipe is suggested in favor of a comprehensive process supervision. The partial replacement of the classical recipe with the innovative PAT approach allows focusing on the end-point evaluation and the optimal trajectory problem. These features, in their turn, allow speeding up the production rate while assessing the product quality through the continuous monitoring of the process variables.
