DETONIM is a program on the detonation of solid explosives.

DETONIM allows evaluating the consequences of explosions from solid explosives such as TNT, RDX, ANFO, ammonium nitrate, rocket propellants.

The role played by loose explosives, explosive in munitions, depots, embankments, and other protective barriers is taken into account by DETONIM.

DETONIM can be used for either design purposes or safety assessment since it can solve both the direct and indirect problems:

  • Direct problem: given a certain amount of solid explosive and the boundary conditions of the environment/depot determine the consequences at a given distance
  • Indirect problem: given the boundary conditions of the environment/depot determine the maximum quantity of explosive that can be stored in a depot while respecting the safety thresholds

The consequences of accidental explosions are based on the quantification of the effects in terms of:

  • overpressure
  • impulse
  • radiation from the fireball
  • seismic wave
  • fragments production
  • concentration of toxic components

DETONIM has been largely used for the drafting of Safety Reports of SEVESO plants that produce, deal with or dispose solid explosives.
